Apple Blossoms

Apple BlossomsOne of my favorite things about spring is when the apple blossoms appear on my little crab apple tree. The first sign of the deep pink buds is always exciting. When you get near the tree you can hear a steady buzz as honey and bumble bees go from blossom to blossom gathering the nectar.

Every year I say I am going to paint the apple blossoms and somehow time slips by but, not this year! I clipped a branch (you can see some of it in the top right of the photo) and sat down at my art table to paint. I used permanent rose and alizarin crimson for the petals and green gold mixed with ultramarine for the leaves. I used a #14 round watercolor brush for all the washes and added the fine lines of the stamen with a crow quill pen that I dipped in my paint.

I am quite pleased with how this turned out. The petals are a nice soft pink color, the leaves have spots where the paper shows through to keep them from weighing down the composition, and the apple blossoms are shown in different orientations.

This painting and many other pieces of art are available from my shop »

May Updates

Girl in Blue Kimono with Red Parasol - May UpdatesThis month is proving to be quite the artistic adventure.

New Retail Location

I am so happy to share that The Birch Canoe Shop in Casco Maine is now carrying my greeting cards and original art. If you are in the Sebago Lakes Region please stop by, it is a wonderful shop.

The Drawing Plants class is winding down with only 2 classes left. We’ve drawn roses, alstroemerias (peruvian lilies), strawberries, and bell peppers. We’ve covered classic techniques like color theory, mixing greens, burnishing, and values. This week we will revisit working with greens since that always involves mixing colors to achieve the correct value.

Beginning in June I will be offering a 5 week class on Chinese Brush Painting as well as a 4 week class on Drawing Birds in Watercolor Pencil. In mid-July I’ll be teaching a 5 week Drawing Skills Workshop. Fall classes are already in the works and will be posted as soon as they are finalized. Additional information and details on how to sign up for a class are listed on my classes page. I hope you can join us!
