March calendarAre you ready? Tomorrow we change the calendar to March! I don’t know about you but I am looking forward to Spring beginning on the 20th, it’s a great day and even if it is cold (and where I live that is a possibility) it won’t matter because warmer days are right around the corner. To get you in the mood for spring this month’s calendar features tulips and some fun hand drawn lettering.

Zendala Dare #46

I am on a bit of a flower kick and this week’s Zendala Dare is no different. As soon as I saw the outer bubbles I immediately thought of ladybugs which of course then made me think of flowers. I think it’s the lack of warm weather that has finally gotten to me. So while it snowed off and on all afternoon I happily stayed inside and daydreamed of summer.

A quick sketch using mushrooms to practice rendering white objects. In botanical drawing you strive to achieve a neutral gray that will build the values needed to create dimensionality. The mushrooms were colored using only my Cocoa (burnt sienna) and Cool Grey (blue gray) Derwent Graphitint pencils. The lettering was done in Dark Indigo to bring out the blue in the Cool Grey.

Colored Basil

A few weeks ago I posted a basil study in graphite, this week I finished the study using colored pencil. The first step in the process was a new technique – an opaque layer of watercolor in a mid tone was applied first and allowed to dry (make sure the paper is thoroughly dry). Then dark green pencil was used to add the shadows with chartreuse and cream layered in the lighter areas. The result is rather painterly since no paper shows behind the pencil. This technique is good for when you are under a tight deadline as adding layers of colored pencil can be time consuming.
